Palm Springs Preparations Promising!
The Annual Meeting begins with our Registration Desk opening for participant check-in on Sunday, February 25 from 2:00 – 5:30 PM. The Opening Session will take place from 3:45 – 5:30 PM, directly followed by an opening reception, at which we will drink a toast to the Association’s first 40 years. The opening session will feature a panel of previous WRSA presidents. Registration reopens at 8:00 AM on Monday morning, and the first slate of paper sessions gets underway at 8:15 or 9:00 AM. The annual Luncheon Banquet will be held on Tuesday, when the Tiebout and Springer-Verlag Prize winners will be announced. Incoming WRSA President, Brenda Moscove, will present her Presidential Address at the Luncheon. Tuesday evening President Moscove will host a cocktail reception for all participants and their spouses. Concurrent paper sessions continue all-day Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. In all, the Preliminary Program lists some 35 regular paper sessions with over 100 individual presentations scheduled.
In addition, the Applied Econometrics Association will be meeting in conjunction with WRSA this year. AEA has scheduled a total of 12 sessions, including papers on econometric methodologies as well as applications. All WRSA conference attendees will be free to attend the AEA sessions, and vice versa.
If you have not yet made all your arrangements to attend, do so soon! We expect our anniversary meeting to have a high turnout and our room block at the Riviera Resort and Racquet Club to fill early. Payment of Annual Meeting Pre-registration Fees and 2001 WRSA Dues may be sent up until February 1 to the Association office in Tucson. The Combined Annual Meeting Pre-registration and Membership Form may be printed out from the web-site and mailed or faxed.
After February 1 we request that you pay on-site at the conference. Receipts for all payments will be given at the conference. For those persons unable to attend the 2001 conference, please renew your WRSA membership prior to February 1 and receive a $5 discount off the regular $55 US annual dues.
We wish all participants a safe trip to Palm Springs. For those unable to attend the 40th Annual Meeting, consider submitting an abstract for the 17th Pacific Conference of the RSAI, scheduled for June 30 – July 4, 2001 in Portland, Oregon.
Palm Springs Checklist
- Make Your Travel Arrangements…
Palm Springs is located 107 miles east / southeast of Los Angeles in the desert country of the Coachela Valley. It has an excellent airport located less than a 5-minute drive or taxi ride from the Riviera Resort and Racquet Club. We strongly suggest that participants who are not driving to the conference look into flying into Palm Springs Regional Airport, since the city is serviced by a large number of airlines.
International participants will likely book flights into Los Angeles International, but they should consider taking the short connecting flight from LAX to avoid 131 miles of Southern California freeway driving! If you should opt for a scenic California freeway drive, full directions are available on the WRSA web site.

- Reserve Your Rental Car…
Although the Riviera Resort and Racquet Club is only a short taxi drive from the Palm Springs airport and eating opportunities exist within walking distance, we suggest that you consider renting a car to maximize your enjoyment of your stay in the area.
Alamo is offering WRSA participants extremely attractive special conference rates on all sizes of vehicles with free unlimited mileage and frequent flyer credits with most major airline programs. Conference rates will be effective from February 18 through March 6.

- Place Your Hotel Reservation…
The Palm Springs Riviera Resort and Racquet Club is now accepting reservations for WRSA’s 40th Annual Meeting, scheduled for February 25 – 26, 2001. Reservations can be made by calling 800-444-8311 from within the U.S., or 760-327-8311 from outside the country. If phoning in your reservation, be sure to mention that you are coming for the Western Regional Science Association meeting in order to get the conference room rate.
A hotel reservation form is also available on the WRSA web site (Click Here!). This form can be printed out and faxed to 760-327-4323 or mailed to Palm Springs Riviera Resort and Racquet Club, Attn: Reservations, 1600 North Indian Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262-4602 USA. Reservations must be made by February 5, 2001. However, we highly recommend making necessary reservations early, as our room block tends to fill quickly.
- Preregister!
If you have not already done so, send in the conference preregistration form with payment to the WRSA office. Conference participants were sent a copy at the time of paper acceptance. A duplicate copy was mailed with this Newsletter, or print out the form from our web site (click here).
- Plan Your Presentation…
WRSA invited paper sessions allocate 45 minutes for each paper, inclusive of the discussant’s remarks. Authors should keep their presentations to 25 minutes and discussants should aim for no more than 10 minute presentations to allow the 10 remaining minutes for discussion from the floor.
Meeting rooms will include OVERHEAD PROJECTORS ONLY. Prepare your talk on transparencies. We cannot afford the exorbitant rental fees for slide projectors or Video Projection Units.

Turnbull Cup Golf Tournament
The 2001 WRSA Turnbull Cup Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, February 24th at the Mesquite Country Club in Palm Springs. Tee times will begin at 12:00 noon. The $105 entry fee includes green fees, cart, range balls, lunch, and prizes.
Please register for the tournament by sending a check for the full entry fee to Terry Clower, Center for Economic Development, P.O. Box 310469, Denton, Texas 76203 by January 15th. One half of the entry fee becomes non-refundable after January 24th. Information and a registration form are now available for download at www.unt.edu/cedr/WRSAGolfTournament.htm.

Applied Econometrics Association to Meet in Palm Springs with WRSA
The WRSA 2001 Program Committee is very pleased to announce that the Applied Econometrics Association (AEA) will hold its annual meeting in conjunction with WRSA’s conference in Palm Springs. WRSA meeting attendees are welcome to attend the twelve sessions organized by Arthur Getis, Jean Paelinck, and Henri Zoller. AEA members will also be free to attend WRSA sessions.
Among the contributors to the AEA sessions are several longtime WRSA members, as well as a number of new faces. The AEA organizers have taken great care to draw papers from both sides of the Atlantic, resulting in a stellar line-up of papers related to the field of econometrics. The sessions have been organized around the core areas of methodology and econometric applications, so that there is guaranteed to be something of interest to everyone.
Following WRSA procedure, we request that all AEA participants submit their pre-registration forms and payments to our offices in Tucson, Arizona before February 1st, 2001. (Click here for the special AEA WRSA Preregistration Form.) Those paying after this date will be charged $170 and are requested to register at the meeting. WRSA membership is not required for those participating in the AEA sessions, but is strongly encouraged. The addition of the AEA sessions to the regular WRSA Palm Springs program promises to strengthen an already strong 40th Anniversary program, and we are grateful for all the hard work put forth by the AEA organizers!

14th Advanced Studies Institute of the European Regional Science Association, June 10 – 16, 2001, Groningen, The Netherlands
ERSA’s 14th Advanced Studies Institute, “To Live and Work in Different Urban Systems,” will be held in Groningen, The Netherlands, June 10 – 16, 2001. This summer institute is geared towards providing 40 young scientists, including PhD students, the opportunity to learn about the spatial behavior of entrepreneurs, employees, and consumers in different urban contexts from experts in regional science.
The deadline for submitting abstracts is January 1, 2001. Authors of all accepted papers will be notified by February 1, 2001, and the deadline for submitting completed papers will be May 15, 2001.

32nd Mid-Continent Regional Science Association Annual Conference, May 31 – June 2, 2001, Duluth, Minnesota
The 32nd Annual Conference of the Mid-Continent Regional Science Association will be held in Duluth, Minnesota from May 31 – June 2, 2001 at the Duluth Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites.
The deadline for submitting abstracts is March 31, 2001. Abstracts should be sent to Dave Marcouiller at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Organized sessions and papers are welcome on any topic related to regional or urban areas, including Regional Modeling, Rural Development, Environmental Quality, Migration, and Growth Management.
